The New Deltaالدلتا الجديدة

Turning 2.2 million feddans of desert into fertile farmland.تحويل 2.2 مليون فدان من الصحراء إلى أراضٍ زراعية خصبة

The "New Delta" is a massive land-reclamation and agricultural mega-project that aims to turn desert into fertile farmland. Launched in 2021, it lies west of the Nile Delta in the Western Desert and is intended to boost national food security and exports.

The project seeks to reclaim and cultivate over 2.2 million feddans (about 3,500 square miles) and is designed to create up to 5 million jobs through agro-processing industrial zones.

Key Components & Technologies

  • Artificial river: over 114 km long (reportedly ~$5.2 billion) carrying Nile water to the new zones.
  • Wastewater treatment: the El Dabaa plant — cited as the world's largest — processes 7.5 million m³ of drainage water per day for irrigation.
  • Modern irrigation: smart, renewable-powered systems to conserve water in the arid climate.
  • Agri-tech: advanced cultivation, harvesting, and weather-resistant crop varieties.

Milestones

  • Executed in phases, starting with land reclamation and the artificial river.
  • Satellite imagery in November 2024 showed expanding green landscapes.
  • In May 2025, officials marked the wheat harvest and inaugurated the first phase of the "Future of Egypt" industrial city.

The ambitious project has faced scrutiny over cost and long-term water sustainability, given its reliance on treated wastewater.
