Egypt's New Railways

Africa's first high-speed rail — a "Suez Canal on tracks."

Egypt is developing Africa's first and the world's sixth-largest high-speed rail network — a roughly $23 billion, 2,000-kilometer electric system connecting around 60 cities from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

Spearheaded by Siemens Mobility, the multi-line project features high-speed passenger and freight trains, aiming to cut travel times, reduce emissions, and create jobs — a "Suez Canal on tracks."

Three Lines

  • Line 1: a 660 km line from Ain Sokhna through the new capital to Alexandria and Marsa Matruh.
  • Line 2: a 1,100 km line connecting Greater Cairo to Abu Simbel near the Sudan border.
  • Line 3: a 225 km line linking Luxor with the Red Sea ports of Hurghada and Safaga.

Infrastructure & Rolling Stock

  • Electrified lines with substations and catenary systems and ETCS Level 2 signaling.
  • Smart station hubs with integrated services.
  • Velaro high-speed trains, Desiro regional trains, and Vectron freight locomotives.

Timeline & Partners

Contracts were signed with Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction, and The Arab Contractors, with the first segment under construction and the first Velaro high-speed train set for delivery in 2025.
