Egypt is developing Africa's first and the world's sixth-largest high-speed rail network — a roughly $23 billion, 2,000-kilometer electric system connecting around 60 cities from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

Spearheaded by Siemens Mobility, the multi-line project features high-speed passenger and freight trains, aiming to cut travel times, reduce emissions, and create jobs — a "Suez Canal on tracks."

تشمل شبكة القطارات الحديثة في مصر مشروع القطار الكهربائي السريع الذي يربط العين السخنة بالعلمين بطول 460 كم وسرعة تصميمية 250 كم/س، إلى جانب قطارات تالجو الفاخرة وقطارات الديسيرو ذات الطابقين والقطار الكهربائي الخفيف (LRT) الذي يربط مدن شرق القاهرة عبر 103 كم و19 محطة.

Three Lines

Line 1: a 660 km line from Ain Sokhna through the new capital to Alexandria and Marsa Matruh.
Line 2: a 1,100 km line connecting Greater Cairo to Abu Simbel near the Sudan border.
Line 3: a 225 km line linking Luxor with the Red Sea ports of Hurghada and Safaga.

Electrified lines with substations and catenary systems and ETCS Level 2 signaling.
Smart station hubs with integrated services.
Velaro high-speed trains, Desiro regional trains, and Vectron freight locomotives.

Timeline & Partners

Contracts were signed with Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction, and The Arab Contractors, with the first segment under construction and the first Velaro high-speed train set for delivery in 2025.

Awarded to Siemens Mobility with Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors, Egypt's high-speed network will span over 2,000 km across three lines — set to become the world's sixth-largest and to reach nearly 90% of the population, cutting journey times by up to half. The Velaro high-speed train made its public debut in Egypt in November 2025, with the regional Desiro entering trial runs, as construction continues toward completion around 2027.
