If the New Delta has a flagship crop, it is wheat. As the foundation of the Egyptian diet — the grain behind the country's beloved bread — wheat sits at the very heart of the project's mission. For years, Egypt has been one of the world's largest wheat importers; the New Delta aims to change that, growing vast quantities of wheat across its new desert fields to feed the nation and reduce its dependence on supplies from abroad.
إن كان للدلتا الجديدة محصولٌ رئيسي، فهو القمح. وبوصفه أساس الغذاء المصري — الحبّ وراء الخبز المحبوب في البلاد — يقع القمح في صميم مهمّة المشروع. فلسنوات، كانت مصر من أكبر مستوردي القمح في العالم؛ وتهدف الدلتا الجديدة إلى تغيير ذلك، بزراعة كمّيات هائلة من القمح عبر حقولها الصحراوية الجديدة لإطعام الأمّة وتقليل اعتمادها على الإمدادات من الخارج.

Wheat is woven into Egyptian life through bread, the country's essential everyday food. Because demand is so vast, Egypt has long relied heavily on imported wheat, leaving it exposed to swings in global prices and supply. Growing more wheat at home is therefore not only an agricultural goal but a matter of national security and stability, which is why it stands as the New Delta's headline crop.

Across the reclaimed desert of the New Delta, wheat is grown on a large scale using modern, mechanised methods and efficient smart irrigation. Soil studies confirmed that much of the land is well suited to strategic grains like wheat. Egypt's overall wheat production has been rising in recent years, and projects like the New Delta are designed to push it higher still, turning empty desert into productive grain fields.
