Egypt's New Roads & Highways

7,000 km of new roads connecting cities, ports, and a continent.7000

Egypt has undertaken an extensive road-building program under the National Roads Project, launched in 2014. The effort expands the transportation network to support economic development, connect new cities, and ease congestion.

The flagship initiative includes 7,000 km of new roads and the upgrading of 10,000 km of existing ones.

Key Projects & Axes

  • Integrated logistics corridors: seven major corridors linking production areas to sea and dry ports.
  • The Regional Ring Road: links major highways and diverts heavy transit trucks away from Cairo.
  • Cairo–Cape Town Road: Egypt's high-quality portion of the Pan-African route.
  • Red Sea to Chad & West Africa: a new 1,720 km road, with construction set to begin in late 2025.
  • "Moses" Bridge to Saudi Arabia: a planned $4 billion Red Sea crossing connecting Africa and Asia.

Impact

  • A 2023 study found the project revitalized the economy by improving accessibility.
  • Egypt's Road Quality Index ranking rose from 118th in 2015 to 18th in 2024.
  • New bypasses and bridges aim to cut congestion, though some urban designs have drawn criticism.
