Hardy, drought-tolerant export crops — olives and figs thrive in the New Delta's desert climate, adding valuable cash crops to the project's harvest.
Not every crop in the New Delta is a staple grain. The project also cultivates hardy tree crops like olives and figs — fruits that are naturally well suited to a hot, dry climate. Drought-tolerant and resilient, they thrive in the desert conditions of the new farmland, and as prized export crops they bring valuable income, diversifying the harvest beyond grains and fresh vegetables.

Thriving in heat and drought.
Olives and figs are classic crops of hot, dry Mediterranean and desert regions, naturally drought-tolerant and able to flourish where thirstier crops would struggle. This makes them an excellent fit for the New Delta's arid environment, allowing productive use of the land while keeping water demand relatively modest. Their resilience is exactly why they were chosen as part of the project's carefully planned mix of crops.

Both olives — and olive oil — and figs are high-value export products in strong demand internationally. Egypt is already a significant producer of olives, and growing more in the New Delta supports the country's agricultural exports, which have risen substantially in recent years. As cash crops, they help turn the new farmland into a source of foreign earnings as well as food, strengthening the project's economic case.

A balanced mix of crops.
By adding hardy fruit crops to its grains and vegetables, the New Delta builds a more diverse and resilient agricultural base. Olives and figs complement the flagship wheat and other staples, spreading risk across different crops and markets. This thoughtful diversity — staples for food security and cash crops for export — is part of what makes the New Delta a comprehensive vision for the future of Egyptian farming.
