Moving vast quantities of water across — and up — the desert is no simple matter, and it falls to the New Delta's lifting and pumping stations to do the heavy lifting. Dozens of these giant stations work around the clock to push water from the artificial river up onto the high desert plateau and out across the new fields. Without them, the water simply could not reach the land that needs it; they are the powerful, tireless heart of the irrigation system.

One of the great challenges of the New Delta was that the water needed to flow against the natural slope of the land, inland and uphill toward the desert plateau. The solution was a system of powerful lifting and pumping stations — reported to number in the dozens, with around a dozen along the artificial river itself and many more across the wider network. Each station raises and pushes the water onward, stage by stage, to ever-higher and more distant ground.

These stations handle enormous volumes of water continuously, and require a great deal of electricity to run — supported by a series of dedicated power stations built specifically to supply the project. Working alongside the artificial river and the canal network, the pumping stations ensure a steady, reliable flow of irrigation water reaches every part of the cultivated area, day and night.

By moving water across such a huge area, the pumping stations make it possible to irrigate the roughly two million acres the New Delta aims to bring into cultivation. They are an essential, if less glamorous, part of the megaproject — the muscle that complements the record-breaking treatment plant and the artificial river, together forming one of the most ambitious irrigation systems ever built.
