A man-made waterway over 114 kilometres long — a kind of 'second Nile' carrying treated water deep into the western desert to bring vast new farmland to life.
To carry water across the desert, the New Delta project required something extraordinary: a brand-new river. The Artificial River is a man-made waterway stretching over 114 kilometres, sometimes described as a "second Nile". It channels treated drainage water from the El Hammam plant deep into the western desert, redirecting water that once flowed uselessly to the sea so it can instead irrigate hundreds of thousands of acres of newly reclaimed farmland.
A Second Nile ·
Over 114 km of waterway.
Announced as one of the largest artificial rivers in the world, this waterway runs for more than 114 kilometres across the desert. Part open canal and part underground pipeline, it forms the main artery of the New Delta's irrigation network. The idea of building an entirely new river to green the desert captured the imagination at home and abroad, earning it the nickname of a "second Nile" for modern Egypt.
Redirecting the Water ·
From sea to soil.
The river's clever purpose is to redirect water that was being wasted. Agricultural drainage water that once flowed out through the Delta into the Mediterranean is instead collected, treated at El Hammam, and sent down the artificial river into the desert. Engineering this required even reversing the natural slope of the land in places, pushing the water uphill and inland — a remarkable feat that turns a former loss into a lifeline for new agriculture.
Irrigating the Desert ·
Feeding the new fields.
From the artificial river, a web of canals and pumping stations distributes the water across the vast fields of the New Delta. This network is what makes it possible to farm land that was, until recently, empty desert. As the backbone of the whole project, the artificial river stands as one of the boldest pieces of water engineering anywhere — a man-made river built to secure the nation's food future.
