If the Velaro trains are the glamorous sprinters of Egypt's new railways, the Desiro HC trains are its dependable workhorses. These high-capacity regional trains, 94 of them in all, are built to move large numbers of people between the towns and cities along the network. Each can carry around 849 passengers, making them ideal for the busy regional and commuter routes that will knit Egypt's regions more closely together.

The Desiro HC ("High Capacity") trains are designed to carry large numbers of passengers efficiently, each set holding up to around 849 people. This makes them perfectly suited to regional and commuter services, where high ridership and frequent stops demand spacious, quick-boarding trains. With 94 of them in the fleet, they provide the everyday capacity that turns the new network into a practical option for millions of ordinary journeys.

While the Velaro trains link major cities at high speed, the Desiro fleet serves the regional layer of the network, connecting smaller towns and intermediate stations along the routes. Egypt ordered 94 Desiro HC regional trains from Siemens as part of its landmark rail contract, alongside the Velaro high-speed sets and the Vectron freight locomotives. Modern, air-conditioned, and electric, they raise the standard of regional travel dramatically. Together with the rest of the fleet, they make the new railways a complete system serving fast intercity, busy regional, and freight needs alike.
