The stars of Egypt's new high-speed rail network are its sleek Velaro trains. Built by Siemens, these are the fast passenger trains that will glide across the country at up to 250 km/h, slashing journey times between distant cities. With 41 of them on order, each seating 489 passengers and specially engineered to cope with desert sand and heat, the Velaro fleet is the gleaming flagship of Egypt's most ambitious transport programme in decades.

The Velaro trains are designed to run at up to 250 km/h, transforming long-distance travel in Egypt. Journeys that once took many hours by road or conventional train will be cut dramatically — the flagship line is designed to carry passengers the 660 km between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean in around three hours. Fast, smooth, and electric, the Velaro fleet brings genuine high-speed rail to Egypt for the first time, on a par with the fast trains of Europe and Asia.

Egypt's climate poses special challenges for high-speed trains, and the Velaro fleet has been specially adapted for it. The trains are engineered to shrug off desert sand and intense heat, with sealed systems and cooling designed for the harsh conditions of the Egyptian environment. This ruggedisation ensures they can run reliably and frequently across the deserts the network crosses, from the Red Sea coast to the Mediterranean.

Egypt ordered 41 Velaro trains, each an eight-car set seating around 489 passengers in modern, comfortable carriages. They are the high-speed passenger backbone of the new rail network, complemented by the Desiro regional trains and Vectron freight locomotives. As the most visible symbol of Egypt's rail revolution, the Velaro fleet embodies the leap the country is making toward fast, modern, sustainable transport.
