One of the first pieces of Egypt's new transport network to actually open was the LRT — the electric Light Rail Transit line linking eastern Cairo with the New Administrative Capital. Running since 2022, it lets passengers reach the new capital from Cairo in under an hour aboard clean, modern electric trains. As an early, working part of the grand vision, it gave commuters a fast new option years before the monorail and high-speed lines came on stream.
أحد أوّل أجزاء شبكة نقل مصر الجديدة التي افتُتحت فعلًا كان القطار الكهربائي الخفيف (LRT) الرابط بين شرق القاهرة والعاصمة الإدارية الجديدة. ويعمل منذ 2022، ويتيح للركّاب بلوغ العاصمة الجديدة من القاهرة في أقلّ من ساعة على متن قطاراتٍ كهربائية حديثة نظيفة. وبوصفه جزءًا مبكّرًا عاملًا من الرؤية الكبرى، منح المسافرين خيارًا سريعًا جديدًا قبل سنواتٍ من تشغيل المونوريل والخطوط السريعة.

The LRT was among the first new lines to enter service, opening in 2022. This electric light-rail line stretches from eastern Cairo out toward the New Administrative Capital and the 10th of Ramadan area, covering the distance in under an hour. Modern, air-conditioned, and electric, it offered an immediate, tangible improvement for commuters travelling between Cairo and the rapidly developing east — a working preview of the transport revolution to come.

Being fully electric, the LRT supports Egypt's goals of cleaner, lower-emission transport. It connects with other parts of the network — including the New Capital monorail within the new city and the Cairo Metro at its Cairo end — helping form the integrated system that ties the capital region together. For residents of Cairo's eastern new towns, it has become a practical daily link.

As one of the earliest components of the new network to carry passengers, the LRT was an important proof of concept for Egypt's ambitious transport plans. It demonstrated, in everyday service, the shift toward fast, clean, connected mass transit — paving the way for the monorails and the high-speed rail that are now joining it to complete the picture of a modernised Egyptian railway.
