One of the most futuristic additions to Egypt's transport network is the New Capital Monorail — a sleek, driverless line gliding on a single elevated beam between east Cairo and the New Administrative Capital. Running roughly 54 kilometres, it opened to passengers in 2026, finally giving the new capital a fast public-transport link to Cairo. Together with its sister line, it forms part of what is set to be the longest driverless monorail system in the world.

The New Capital Monorail (the East Nile line) runs roughly 54 kilometres with around two dozen stations, connecting eastern Cairo with the New Administrative Capital. Fully driverless and automated, its modern trains travel at up to 80 km/h, covering the journey in around an hour. After years of construction, it opened to passengers in 2026, providing the first dedicated public-transport spine between Cairo and the new seat of government.

The monorail is designed to plug into the wider transport system: it connects with the Cairo Metro at its Cairo end and with the LRT within the New Capital, so passengers can travel seamlessly across Greater Cairo and into the new city. As a driverless system using modern automated trains, it offers frequent, reliable service and a smooth, elevated ride above the city's notorious traffic.

Together with the 6th October line, the New Capital Monorail forms a two-line system that, when fully complete, is set to be the longest driverless monorail in the world. Conceived to ease Cairo's severe congestion and connect its new satellite cities, it is a flagship of Egypt's push for clean, modern mass transit — though, like any big new system, its ridership and value are still building as the new capital grows.
