A vast outer loop around Greater Cairo — diverting transit trucks and through-traffic away from the city, and tying together the satellite towns and highways that ring the capital.
To keep a megacity like Cairo moving, traffic that does not need to enter the city must be kept out of it. That is the job of the Regional Ring Road — a huge outer loop encircling Greater Cairo at a distance, well beyond the older inner Ring Road. By diverting long-distance transit traffic and heavy trucks around the capital rather than through it, this vast highway eases congestion and ties together the many new cities and roads that surround Cairo.
A Vast Outer Loop ·
Beyond the inner ring.
The Regional Ring Road is a huge highway loop that encircles Greater Cairo far out from the centre, complementing the older, more congested inner Ring Road. Spanning hundreds of kilometres around the metropolis, it connects the ring of satellite cities — from the New Capital and New Cairo in the east to 6th of October in the west — and links up with the major highways radiating out toward the Delta, the Suez Canal, and Upper Egypt.

Keeping transit out.
The road's key purpose is to divert through-traffic and heavy trucks around Cairo rather than forcing them through the city's crowded streets. Long-distance journeys — say, from the Delta to the Red Sea, or from Alexandria to Upper Egypt — can now bypass the capital entirely. This removes a major source of congestion and pollution from the city while speeding up freight and transit across the country.
Tying It Together ·
A backbone for the region.
Beyond easing traffic, the Regional Ring Road acts as a connective backbone for the whole Greater Cairo region, stitching together the new cities, industrial zones, and highways that have grown up around the capital. As one of the largest elements of Egypt's national roads programme, it is central to managing the traffic of one of the world's great megacities and supporting its continued expansion outward.
