Giant road tunnels bored beneath the Suez Canal — finally tying the Sinai Peninsula firmly to the mainland, and opening a new era for the development of Sinai.
For generations, the Suez Canal was both a source of pride and a barrier, separating the Sinai Peninsula from the rest of Egypt. The new Suez Canal road tunnels changed that. Bored deep beneath the canal near Port Said and Ismailia, these giant tunnels carry roads directly under the waterway, finally tying Sinai firmly to the mainland and opening a new era for the peninsula's development and connection to the rest of the country.
Crossing Beneath the Canal ·
Tunnels where ships sail above.
The tunnels carry roads deep beneath the Suez Canal, allowing vehicles to cross from the mainland into Sinai while enormous ships sail overhead. Major tunnel crossings were built near Port Said in the north and Ismailia further south, bored by some of the world's largest tunnelling machines. They join the older Ahmed Hamdi road tunnel and the canal's bridges and ferries to create multiple fixed links across this strategic waterway.
Connecting Sinai ·
A peninsula joined.
The tunnels' great significance is in connecting the Sinai Peninsula firmly to the rest of Egypt. By providing fast, reliable road crossings that do not depend on bridges or ferries, they make it far easier for people, goods, and investment to flow into Sinai. This improved access is central to Egypt's long-term plans to develop and populate Sinai, bringing new towns, farms, and industry to a region long held back by its isolation.
A Strategic Link ·
A feat beneath a feat.
Building road tunnels beneath one of the world's busiest shipping lanes — without ever interrupting the canal traffic above — was a major engineering achievement. The tunnels are among the headline projects of Egypt's decade of intensive road and infrastructure building, and they stand as a powerful symbol of the country's ambition to overcome natural barriers and knit its territory more tightly together.
