One of the great road journeys of the world runs the entire length of Africa, from Cairo in the north to Cape Town in the south. Egypt forms the northern gateway of this legendary trans-African route, and has built its own stretch to a high, modern standard. Linking the capital southward through the country and on toward Egypt's borders, it ties Egypt into a continent-spanning highway and a vision of African connection and trade.

The Cairo–Cape Town highway is one of the great trans-African corridors, conceived to run the full length of the continent from the Mediterranean to the southern tip of Africa. Egypt sits at its northern end, and the road heads south from Cairo through the country toward its southern borders, linking onward through Sudan and beyond. It connects Egypt by land to the heart of Africa.

Egypt has developed and upgraded its portion of the route to a high, modern standard as part of its national roads drive, providing a smooth, fast, well-built highway.
