Egypt has shaped Arabic music for over a century. The legendary Umm Kulthum — "the Star of the East" — drew millions to her monthly broadcasts, while composers like Mohammed Abdel Wahab defined classical Arabic song. Today that legacy lives on in street-born shaabi and the electronic mahraganat sound.
Cairo has been the heart of Arab cinema since the early 20th century, producing thousands of films and stars known across the Arab world — among them the international icon Omar Sharif. Egyptian films and television remain the most widely watched in the region.
In 1988, novelist Naguib Mahfouz became the first Arabic-language writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. His Cairo Trilogy chronicles ordinary Cairene life across generations and remains a cornerstone of modern Arabic literature.
