Egypt is building its first-ever high-speed rail — a vast network of electric trains stretching some 2,000 kilometres across the country. Constructed with the German company Siemens, it will link the Mediterranean coast, the Red Sea, the Nile Valley, and the far south, carrying passengers and freight at high speed and cutting journey times in half. Nicknamed "the Suez Canal on rails," it is one of the largest transport projects in the world and a centrepiece of Egypt's modernisation.

The first line — nicknamed the "Suez Canal on rails" — runs about 660 kilometres, connecting Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea through Cairo and the New Administrative Capital to Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean. Using sleek Siemens Velaro trains designed to run at up to 250 km/h in Egypt's hot, dusty climate, it is expected to slash travel times by up to half and carry both millions of passengers and large volumes of freight between the two seas.

The full network is planned as three lines totalling around 2,000 kilometres — set to be one of the largest high-speed systems in the world. Beyond the first line, a second is planned to run along the Nile from Cairo south toward Aswan and Abu Simbel, opening up Upper Egypt, while a third line will connect Luxor with the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Safaga. Together they will tie together Egypt's coasts, cities, ports, and great tourist sites as never before.

The network is being built by a consortium led by Siemens, with Egyptian partners Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors, and will be operated and maintained by Germany's Deutsche Bahn alongside Egypt's Elsewedy Electric. Designed to carry both passengers and freight, it promises faster, safer journeys and a big reduction in road traffic and carbon emissions. Tracks are being laid across the desert, and the first line is expected to enter service in the coming years — a transport revolution for the whole country.
