- Philae Temple — the temple of Isis, moved island by island to escape the rising water behind the dam, reached by motorboat. One of the loveliest settings in Egypt.
- The High Dam — a short stop, more interesting for what it explains than what it looks like: Lake Nasser, the relocation of Abu Simbel and Philae, and the end of the Nile flood.
- The Unfinished Obelisk — still attached to the bedrock in the granite quarry, cracked and abandoned. The clearest lesson anywhere in how these things were actually cut.
- Nubian Museum — excellent, modern, and a proper account of a culture largely displaced by the dam.
- Elephantine Island — ruins, a small museum, and Nubian villages you can walk through.
- Tombs of the Nobles — cut into the west bank cliff, with a fine view back over the river.

Most cruise itineraries give Aswan a single afternoon, which is not enough. An extra night before or after the cruise is one of the cheapest improvements available to an Egypt trip — it gives you Philae unhurried, a felucca at sunset, and a morning free for Abu Simbel.
October to April is comfortable; Aswan is the hottest city in Egypt in summer.
