The Giza necropolis holds three main pyramids built over roughly eighty years in the Fourth Dynasty. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, finished around 2560 BC, was the tallest structure on earth for close to four thousand years; it stood about 146 metres and has lost its outer casing and around eight metres of height. Khafre's pyramid looks taller because it sits on higher ground and still wears a cap of original limestone casing at the summit. Menkaure's is the smallest of the three.
Around them are queens' pyramids, mastaba tombs of officials, the Great Sphinx with its Valley Temple, and the Khufu boat — a dismantled cedar vessel buried beside the Great Pyramid, now moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum nearby.

A general ticket gets you onto the plateau and up to the exteriors, the Sphinx enclosure and the surrounding tombs. Entering a pyramid costs extra and is sold separately for each one — Khufu is the most expensive and most popular, Khafre and Menkaure are cheaper and usually much quieter. Prices are set by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and have risen several times in recent years, so check the current rate when you book rather than trusting an older blog.

Inside the Great Pyramid there is a low, steep ascending passage and a Grand Gallery leading to an empty granite burial chamber. There is nothing decorated to see — the reason to go is the engineering and the atmosphere. It is hot, airless and cramped, and not a good idea if you are claustrophobic or have knee, back or heart problems.
Camels, horses and hassleالجمال والخيول والمضايقات
The plateau has a long-standing culture of touts selling camel rides, horse carts, scarves and "free" gifts that turn out not to be free. The practical defences are simple: agree a price and a duration out loud before you get on any animal, pay at the end rather than the start, be firm and friendly with a clear no, and keep walking. Ministry-licensed tourist police are on the plateau if you need them.
Animal welfare at Giza has drawn repeated criticism. If a camel or horse looks underfed, injured or overworked, do not hire it — plenty of operators keep their animals well, and the plateau is entirely walkable on foot.
Combining Giza with the Grand Egyptian Museumالجمع بين الأهرامات والمتحف المصري الكبير
The Grand Egyptian Museum sits about two kilometres from the plateau and opened fully in November 2025. The natural pairing is the museum in the morning when it is cooler and less crowded, lunch, then the plateau in the late afternoon for softer light and thinner crowds. Combined tickets covering both are sold.
Add Saqqara and Dahshur if you have a second day around Giza. Saqqara's Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest large stone building in the world, and Dahshur's Bent and Red Pyramids show the design problem being solved in real time — and both are far quieter than Giza.
