Private tours give you a car, a driver and an Egyptologist guide to yourself. In Egypt this costs far less than the equivalent in Europe, and it removes the two things that wear visitors down: transport logistics and the constant negotiation at every site. For families and first-time visitors it is usually the right answer.
Small group tours of eight to sixteen people are cheaper again, follow a fixed route, and work well for solo travellers. Large coach tours are cheapest and arrive at sites at the worst hours.
Independent travel is entirely possible — domestic flights are cheap, trains run Cairo to Luxor and Aswan, and you can hire a guide for a single day at a single site. The trade-off is your time and patience rather than money.

Not legally, but at the major sites a licensed Egyptologist turns a wall of carvings into a story, and their presence reduces hassle considerably. Many visitors hire guides for the big sites and travel independently in between.
Are Egypt tour packages good value?
Often yes, because internal flights, cruise nights, transfers and tickets bought separately add up to more than a package rate. The saving disappears if the package is padded with shopping stops or uses hotels far from where you want to be.
How much should I tip in Egypt?
Tipping is customary and expected across the service economy. Operators generally suggest a daily amount for guides and drivers and a communal box for cruise crews; carry small notes, as change is often unavailable.
Can I book tours after I arrive?
Yes, hotels and local agencies sell day tours at short notice, usually cheaper than booking abroad. Multi-day packages, cruise cabins and internal flights are better booked ahead in the October to April season.
