Matching cruise nights to land nightsمطابقة الليالي
| 3-night cruise | Aswan to Luxor, downstream. Pairs with 3–4 Cairo nights for a 7–8 day trip. The cheapest cruise segment on the river. |
|---|---|
| 4-night cruise | Luxor to Aswan, upstream, with a fuller Luxor programme at the start. Pairs with 4 Cairo nights for 9–10 days. |
| 7-night round trip | Luxor to Aswan and back. Pairs with 3 Cairo nights for a 12-day trip, and revisits the same temples at a slower pace. |
| Dahabiya, 5–7 nights | Small sailing boat, more stops, higher cost. Needs 12+ days total to justify the pace. |
Sailing direction matters for flights: an upstream cruise ends in Aswan, so you fly home from there rather than Luxor. Check your international routing supports it before fixing the direction.
What the cruise changesما الذي تغيّره الرحلة
- You unpack once for the southern half of the trip, which is the main practical argument for it.
- Edfu and Kom Ombo become easy. Both sit on the riverbank between Luxor and Aswan and are awkward to reach by road.
- Shore visits run on the boat's schedule, which is not always the coolest or quietest hour. Private guiding on shore fixes this partially.
- Cairo gets compressed. Cruise nights come out of somewhere; usually Saqqara is the casualty.
- Your flight home shifts to Luxor or Aswan, often via Cairo.
Judging the cruise halfتقييم الجزء النهري
The cruise is usually the largest line in the quote and the least specified. Ask for the boat name, not a star rating; check the refit date, passenger count and cabin deck; and confirm whether the operator can substitute a different vessel and on what terms. Common questionsأسئلة شائعة
How many nights should the cruise part be?
Three or four. Both cover Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan; four gives a fuller Luxor programme. Seven-night round trips repeat stops rather than adding them.
Which direction is better, Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?
Aswan to Luxor sails downstream and is usually a night shorter and cheaper. Luxor to Aswan gives more Luxor time up front. The bigger factor is which airport suits your flight home.
Does a cruise replace hotel nights in Luxor?
Partly. Most cruises include Luxor's East and West Bank visits from the boat, so a separate Luxor hotel stay becomes optional.
Can I have a private guide on a shared cruise?
Yes, and many operators arrange exactly that — shared boat, private Egyptologist and transport for shore visits. It costs far less than chartering a dahabiya.
