Giza is three pyramids, a Sphinx and a plateau, and it takes a morning. But the pyramid story is spread across sixty kilometres of desert edge, and the interesting version needs two days:
- Day one — Giza. The plateau at opening, inside Khafre or Khufu, the panorama point, then the Grand Egyptian Museum in the afternoon.
- Day two — Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. Djoser's Step Pyramid, the oldest large stone building anywhere. Then Dahshur's Bent Pyramid and Red Pyramid, where the geometry visibly gets solved between one and the next. You can usually walk into the Red Pyramid with almost nobody else there.
Adding Dahshur is the single best upgrade available to a pyramid-focused trip, and most packages leave it out.

Giza and Saqqara are Old Kingdom, roughly 2600–2500 BC. Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel are New Kingdom, around a thousand years later — closer in time to the Roman Empire than to the pyramid builders. A good guide will make that gap the spine of the trip; a poor one will present both as undifferentiated "ancient Egypt".
If you only remember one thing to ask an operator: does the itinerary include Dahshur, and who is the guide.

Yes, and it's the most common Egypt itinerary. Nine days is the realistic minimum if you want more than a single morning at Giza.
Are there pyramids near Luxor?
No. The pyramid fields are all in the north, around Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur. Luxor's monuments are temples and rock-cut tombs from a much later period.
Is Dahshur worth adding?
For anyone interested in the pyramids specifically, it's the best addition available — the Bent and Red Pyramids show the engineering problem being solved, and the crowds are a fraction of Giza's.
Should I do the pyramids before or after the cruise?
Before. It puts the Old Kingdom first and the New Kingdom second, which is the order the history happened in and makes the whole trip easier to follow.
