- Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur — the Step Pyramid, the Bent and Red Pyramids, and a fraction of Giza's crowds. The connoisseur's day.
- Islamic Cairo on foot — the Citadel, Sultan Hassan, Al-Muizz Street, Khan el-Khalili. Best late afternoon into evening.
- Coptic Cairo — the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue, the Coptic Museum; compact and usually combined with the above.
- Alexandria — three hours each way by road or train. Long but rewarding; better as an overnight.
- Luxor by air — flights make a day trip technically possible. It works, but it is a lot of money for a rushed version of a two-day city.

Hotels and local agencies sell day tours at short notice, usually cheaper than booking from abroad. For a private car and guide, ask for a written quote covering vehicle, guide, tickets and whether lunch is included, and state that you do not want shopping stops.
