Osiris

God of the afterlife, death, and resurrection — a murdered king, restored to life by Isis, who became the eternal judge and ruler of the dead.

Osiris was one of the most beloved and important gods of ancient Egypt — the lord of the afterlife and the symbol of death conquered. His famous myth, a story of murder, devoted love, and resurrection, lay at the very heart of Egyptian religion. As the god who died and rose again, Osiris promised every Egyptian the hope of eternal life beyond the grave, and as judge of the dead, he weighed the deeds of all who hoped to join him in his blessed kingdom.

The Murder of a God

A tale of betrayal at the dawn of time.

In myth, Osiris was once a wise and beloved king of Egypt, who taught his people farming, law, and civilisation. But his jealous brother Seth, god of chaos, plotted against him — murdering Osiris and, in the most famous version, scattering his body across the land. This act of betrayal plunged the world into mourning and set in motion the most important story in Egyptian religion: the struggle to restore Osiris and avenge his death.

Restored by Love

The devotion that conquered death.

Osiris's devoted wife, the goddess Isis, refused to let him be lost. Through her great magic and unwavering love, she gathered and restored his body and briefly revived him — long enough to conceive their son, Horus. Osiris did not return to rule the living, but instead became king of the afterlife, lord of the realm of the dead. His resurrection made him the eternal symbol of rebirth and renewal — echoed each year in the sprouting of the grain and the flooding of the Nile.

Judge of the Dead ·

The Weighing of the Heart

The hope of every Egyptian soul.

As ruler of the underworld, Osiris presided over the judgement of the dead. In the famous scene, a person's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, truth itself. If the heart was light and pure, the soul was welcomed into Osiris's eternal paradise; if heavy with wrongdoing, a fearsome creature devoured it. So central was this hope that Egyptians wished to become "an Osiris" themselves in death — sharing in his triumph over the grave and his promise of everlasting life.
