Goddess of truth, balance, and cosmic order — both a deity and the sacred principle that held the whole universe together, and against whose feather every soul was judged.
Ma'at was unlike any other Egyptian deity, for she was both a goddess and an idea — the very principle of truth, justice, balance, and cosmic order. To the Egyptians, Ma'at was the sacred order that held the universe together, keeping the sun in its course, the seasons turning, and society just and fair. Living by Ma'at was the duty of every person, and upholding it was the highest task of the pharaoh himself. Her feather of truth decided the fate of every soul.
The Principle of Order ·
The order that holds the world together.
Ma'at was the Egyptian word for truth, justice, harmony, and the right order of the universe — the balance established at the moment of creation. Its opposite was isfet: chaos, falsehood, and disorder. The Egyptians believed the entire cosmos depended on Ma'at being upheld, from the rising of the sun to fairness between neighbours. The pharaoh's sacred duty was to maintain Ma'at on earth — ruling justly, defending the weak, and keeping chaos at bay — so that the world stayed in harmony.
The Feather of Truth ·
The judgement of every soul.
As a goddess, Ma'at was shown as a woman wearing a single ostrich feather on her head — her emblem of truth. That feather played the most famous role in the Egyptian afterlife. At the weighing of the heart, the heart of the deceased was placed on a great scale and balanced against Ma'at's feather, while Anubis watched the scales and Thoth recorded the result. A heart light as the feather meant a life lived in truth — and a place in Osiris's eternal paradise.
A Way of Living ·
An ideal for all of society.
Ma'at was not only worshipped but lived. She represented a whole moral and social ideal — truthfulness, fairness, honesty, and balance — that every Egyptian was expected to follow in daily life. Judges were called "priests of Ma'at," and to "speak Ma'at" was to speak the truth. In this way she was the foundation of Egyptian law, ethics, and good government, binding gods, kings, and ordinary people alike to a shared vision of a just and well-ordered world.
