Isis was perhaps the most beloved goddess in all of Egyptian religion — the great enchantress, the perfect wife, and the devoted mother. Renowned for her boundless magic and her unshakeable love, she restored her murdered husband Osiris and protected their son Horus through every danger. Her appeal was so great that her worship spread far beyond Egypt, across the entire Greco-Roman world, making her one of the most widely adored deities of antiquity.

لعلّ إيزيس كانت أحبّ إلهةٍ في الديانة المصرية كلّها — الساحرة العظيمة، والزوجة المثالية، والأمّ المخلصة. واشتُهرت بسحرها اللامحدود وحبّها الذي لا يتزعزع، فأعادت زوجها المقتول أوزوريس، وحمت ابنهما حورس عبر كل خطر. وكان سحرها من العظمة بحيث انتشرت عبادتها بعيدًا عن مصر، عبر العالم اليوناني الروماني كلّه، فصارت من أكثر الآلهة محبّةً في العصور القديمة.

Isis stands at the centre of Egypt's greatest myth. When her husband Osiris was murdered by his brother Seth, it was Isis who searched tirelessly, gathered and restored his body, and used her powerful magic to revive him. Her devotion became the model of loyal, enduring love in Egyptian culture, and her tears for Osiris were even linked to the life-giving flooding of the Nile. Through her, the god of the dead was given new life.

Isis was the great mother goddess. After reviving Osiris, she bore their son Horus and hid him in the marshes, raising and protecting him from the murderous Seth until he was old enough to claim his father's throne. Images of Isis nursing the infant Horus became among the most tender and enduring in Egyptian art. As protector of children, of the dead, and of the kingship itself, she was a goddess to whom Egyptians turned in their deepest need.

Isis's great temple stood on the island of Philae near Aswan, one of the last places where the old Egyptian religion was still practised. But her appeal reached far wider: in Greco-Roman times her cult spread across the Mediterranean, with temples to Isis as far away as Rome itself. Loved as a goddess of magic, motherhood, healing, and protection, she became one of the most widely worshipped deities of the entire ancient world — a fitting legacy for Egypt's great enchantress.
