An award-winning museum tracing thousands of years of Nubian heritage — from prehistory to the present, and the heroic campaign that rescued Nubia's monuments from the rising Nile.
To understand the deep and distinct civilisation of Nubia, there is no better place than the Nubian Museum in Aswan. This award-winning museum beautifully tells the story of Nubia across thousands of years — from prehistoric times through the pharaonic, Christian, and Islamic eras to the modern day. It also documents one of the great heritage stories of the 20th century: the international campaign that rescued Nubia's temples, including Abu Simbel, from the waters of Lake Nasser.
Celebrating Nubian Heritage ·
Thousands of years of culture.
Opened in 1997 and internationally acclaimed, the Nubian Museum gathers statues, artifacts, jewellery, and everyday objects that trace Nubian civilisation from prehistory onward. Its displays show how Nubia — Egypt's great southern neighbour — developed its own kingdoms, art, and traditions over millennia, at times even ruling Egypt itself. Thoughtfully arranged and beautifully presented, it gives this often-overlooked culture the prominent, dignified showcase it deserves.
The Rescue of Nubia ·
A 20th-century epic.
A central theme of the museum is the dramatic story of the rescue of Nubia's monuments. When the High Dam created Lake Nasser, dozens of temples — and the homeland of the Nubian people — faced being drowned. The museum documents the extraordinary international campaign that cut Abu Simbel, Philae, and other temples into blocks and rebuilt them on higher ground, while also honouring the Nubian communities who were displaced by the rising waters.
