The Aswan High Dam

The monumental 1970s engineering feat that tamed the Nile's ancient floods, generates power for the nation, and created the vast inland sea of Lake Nasser.

For thousands of years, Egyptian life was ruled by the Nile's annual flood. In the 20th century, that ancient rhythm was transformed by one of the largest engineering projects of its age: the Aswan High Dam. Completed in the 1970s, this colossal dam tamed the flood, stored water for year-round irrigation, and generates hydroelectric power for much of the country. It is a defining symbol of modern Egypt — though its vast benefits came with significant costs.

Controlling the ancient flood.

Built between 1960 and 1970 during the era of President Nasser, with substantial Soviet support, the High Dam is a vast rockfill barrier across the Nile, several kilometres long. Its purpose was to end the cycle of unpredictable floods and droughts that had shaped Egyptian life since antiquity. By storing the floodwaters in a giant reservoir, the dam gave Egypt control over the river for the first time, enabling reliable year-round irrigation and protecting the country from both devastating floods and famine-causing low years.

One of the world’s great reservoirs.

The dam created Lake Nasser, one of the largest artificial lakes on Earth, stretching far south behind the dam and into Sudan. This huge reservoir secures Egypt's water supply and powers the dam's hydroelectric station, which provides a major share of the nation's electricity. The lake has also become a destination in its own right, with cruises sailing its remote waters past rescued temples toward Abu Simbel.

A transformation with trade-offs.

The High Dam transformed Egypt's economy and is rightly seen as a landmark of national development — but its effects are complex. Creating Lake Nasser flooded much of ancient Nubia, forcing the relocation of the Nubian people from their homeland and prompting the great international campaign to rescue temples like Philae and Abu Simbel. It also stopped the annual deposit of fertile silt on farmland and altered the river's ecology. Egyptians and historians weigh these costs against its undeniable benefits in different ways.
