Egypt's beloved Mediterranean summer coast, west of Alexandria — a long ribbon of dazzling white sand and turquoise lagoons, dotted with resort towns and summer villages.
Stretching west from Alexandria along the Mediterranean is the North Coast — known to Egyptians simply as "Sahel," the coast. Every summer, it becomes the country's favourite beach playground, as families from Cairo and Alexandria flock to its dazzling white-sand bays and astonishingly turquoise water. Cooler and breezier than the Red Sea, lined with resort towns and gated summer "villages," the Sahel is where modern Egypt goes to relax, swim, and soak up the Mediterranean sun.
Egypt’s Summer Playground ·
A beloved seasonal escape.
For Egyptians, the Sahel is summer. From June to September, when the heat builds inland, much of Cairo and Alexandria decamps to the coast. The draw is the sea itself: stretches of brilliant white sand meeting water in vivid shades of turquoise and aquamarine that rival any in the Mediterranean. Cooled by sea breezes, the Sahel offers a lighter, fresher summer climate than the Red Sea, and a lively, sociable holiday atmosphere that is a world away from Egypt's ancient sites.
Resorts, Villages & Beaches ·
From quiet bays to lively beach clubs.
The coast is lined with a long string of resort towns and gated summer compounds — known locally as "villages" — ranging from family-friendly and laid-back to glamorous and lively. Established hubs around areas like Sidi Abdel Rahman are famed for their beautiful beaches, while marinas, beach clubs, restaurants, and summer nightlife keep the social scene buzzing in peak season. Whether you want a quiet swim in a calm bay or a lively beach-club afternoon, the Sahel has a stretch of sand to suit.
A Booming Coast ·
The Sahel is changing fast.
The North Coast is developing rapidly. Once almost purely a summer destination, it is increasingly being built up as a year-round region, anchored by ambitious new "fourth-generation" cities such as New Alamein, with its towers, marinas, and university. New roads, resorts, and investment are steadily transforming the coast. While summer remains its glittering high season, the Sahel is gradually evolving into a permanent part of modern Egypt's map, not just a seasonal escape.

Best in the summer season.
The Sahel runs west from Alexandria along the coastal highway toward Marsa Matruh, easily reached by road from Alexandria and Cairo. It is busiest and liveliest in high summer (June–September), when the resorts are in full swing; the shoulder months are quieter and milder. Much of the coast is organised around private resort "villages," so it helps to plan where you are staying — but wherever you land, the prize is the same: that famous white sand and turquoise sea.
