A Mediterranean resort city west of Alexandria, famed for its turquoise lagoons and brilliant white sand — home to the stunning Agiba Beach and the legendary Cleopatra's Bath.
Far along the Mediterranean coast west of Alexandria lies Marsa Matruh, a resort city wrapped around one of the most beautiful bays in Egypt. Famed for its calm, impossibly turquoise lagoon and soft white sand, it has long been a favourite summer escape for Egyptian families. Beyond the town's sheltered bay lie a string of spectacular beaches — including the celebrated Agiba — along with echoes of Cleopatra and the dramatic history of the Second World War.

Calm, clear, dazzling water.
Marsa Matruh's greatest treasure is its bay. A natural arm of rock shelters the town's lagoon, creating calm, shallow, crystal-clear water in glowing shades of turquoise, lapping onto fine white sand. It is wonderfully safe for swimming and a magnet for families through the summer. The dazzling colour of the sea here — set against pale sand and bright sky — gives Marsa Matruh a postcard beauty that has made it one of Egypt's best-loved Mediterranean summer destinations.

Coves of legend and beauty.
Beyond the bay lie beaches of real fame. Agiba Beach — whose name means "miracle" — is a tiny, breathtaking cove of turquoise water tucked beneath rugged cliffs, one of the most photographed spots on the coast. Cleopatra's Beach features a natural rock pool known as Cleopatra's Bath, where legend says the queen once swam. And Rommel's Beach recalls the Second World War, when the German general Erwin Rommel reportedly used a nearby cave as a headquarters — today home to a small Rommel Museum.

Ancient roots and desert roads.
Marsa Matruh has a long history, with roots reaching back to Greco-Roman times, and it sits in a region marked by the great battles of El Alamein not far to the east. It is also an important gateway to the desert: the main road south from Matruh leads to the magical Siwa Oasis, making the city a natural starting point for an adventure into Egypt's Western Desert. This blend of beach, history, and desert access gives Marsa Matruh a character all its own.

A classic Egyptian summer.
Marsa Matruh lies on the Mediterranean coast well west of Alexandria, reached by road or rail along the coast, with seasonal flights in summer. Like the wider North Coast, it is busiest and at its best in the summer months, when the sea is warm and the town lively; outside summer it is much quieter. With its glorious bay, famous beaches, and desert gateway, it offers a quintessentially Egyptian seaside holiday.
