Is a guide necessary in Luxor?
The sites are largely unlabelled and the iconography is dense, so a licensed Egyptologist adds a great deal. Many visitors hire one for the West Bank and Karnak and explore the rest independently.
What's the best time of day for the Valley of the Kings?
At opening. The tombs are cooler, the light in the valley is better and the coach groups haven't arrived. By late morning it's hot and slow.
Should cruise passengers book their own Luxor guide?
Many do. Shore excursions follow the boat's timetable, which rarely means being first through the gate. A private guide for the West Bank is a common upgrade.
