Across the Nile from Luxor, hidden in a desolate desert valley, lies the most famous burial ground in the world: the Valley of the Kings. For some five hundred years, the great pharaohs of the New Kingdom were laid to rest here, in tombs cut deep into the rock and decorated with breathtaking painted scenes. From the legendary Tutankhamun to the mighty Ramses, the rulers of Egypt's golden age sleep in this silent valley.

Why the pharaohs hid their tombs.
By the New Kingdom, pharaohs had abandoned conspicuous pyramids, which had proved irresistible to tomb robbers. Instead they chose this remote, hidden valley on the west bank — the land of the setting sun and the dead — and had their tombs tunnelled deep into the cliffs, their entrances concealed. Over the centuries, more than sixty tombs were cut here for kings, queens, and nobles of the 18th to 20th dynasties. Despite all their precautions, almost every tomb was eventually plundered in antiquity — with one spectacular exception.
Tutankhamun & the Great Tombs ·
The tombs that stun every visitor.
In 1922, Howard Carter found the nearly intact tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), packed with the golden treasures that made the boy king world-famous; his mummy still rests in the tomb today. But Tutankhamun's was one of the smaller tombs. Far grander are those of kings like Seti I and Ramses VI, their long corridors and chambers covered floor to ceiling in vivid, beautifully preserved paintings of gods, stars, and the journey through the underworld. Each tomb is a dazzling gateway to the ancient Egyptian vision of the afterlife.

How a visit works.
Not all tombs are open at once — they are rotated to aid preservation — and a standard ticket usually admits you to about three tombs, with separate tickets for special ones such as Tutankhamun's and Seti I's. Photography rules vary, and the tombs can be hot and steep inside. Go early to beat the heat and crowds, bring water, and consider a guide to help you choose the finest open tombs. Nearby lie the Valley of the Queens (with the exquisite tomb of Nefertari) and the temple of Hatshepsut.
