Kitchener's Island

A lush botanical garden filling an entire Nile island — exotic plants from across the world, shady palm avenues, and birdsong, reached by a tranquil felucca ride.

One of the most tranquil spots in all of Aswan is Kitchener's Island — a small Nile island transformed entirely into a lush botanical garden. Planted over a century ago with exotic and tropical species gathered from across the world, it is a green paradise of towering palms, flowering shrubs, and birdsong, set in the middle of the river. Reached by a gentle felucca ride, it offers a cool, peaceful escape and one of the loveliest walks in the region.

An Island of Green

Exotic plants from afar.

Unlike Aswan's other islands, Kitchener's is given over almost entirely to a beautiful botanical garden. Shady avenues lined with palms and exotic trees crisscross the island, planted with flowering and tropical species brought from Asia, Africa, and beyond. Birds flit through the foliage, and the air is cool and fragrant. It is a delightful contrast to the desert and stone of the surrounding monuments — a lush, living oasis floating in the Nile.

How the Garden Began

A soldier’s green passion.

The island takes its English name from Lord Kitchener, the British commander who was given the island in the late 19th century and, sharing a passion for plants, set about turning it into an exotic garden. He imported species from around the world, laying the foundations of the botanical collection that flourishes today. The island has since served as a centre for plant study and remains a public garden — its Arabic name, "Island of Plants," says it all.

A Peaceful Stroll

Best reached by felucca.

Kitchener's Island is reached by boat — most enjoyably by a traditional felucca — making the journey part of the pleasure. Strolling its shady paths is a wonderfully relaxing way to spend an hour or two, especially welcome in the Aswan heat. It combines perfectly with visits to nearby Elephantine Island and the Nubian villages for a gentle day on the river.
