Ancient Abu, set in the middle of the Nile at Aswan — once Egypt's southern frontier town, today a layered site of temple ruins, an ancient Nilometer, and a welcoming Nubian village.

In the middle of the Nile at Aswan lies Elephantine Island, one of the oldest inhabited places in Egypt. Known in ancient times as Abu, it was Egypt's gateway to the south — a frontier town, trading post, and sacred centre. Today the island layers thousands of years of history: the ruins of ancient temples, a remarkable Nilometer, a museum, and a living, welcoming Nubian village, all wrapped in the beauty of the river.

A gateway to the south.

Elephantine was the ancient town of Abu (or Yebu), one of Egypt's oldest settlements and its key frontier post facing Nubia. Its position at the First Cataract made it a vital point for trade and defence, and ivory and goods from the south passed through it — its very name may relate to elephants and the ivory trade. It was also the cult centre of the ram-headed god Khnum, guardian of the Nile's source, giving the island deep religious as well as strategic importance.

The island is a rich archaeological site, with the ruins of the Temple of Khnum and other shrines spanning many periods, plus the Aswan Museum displaying finds from the area. A highlight is the ancient Nilometer — a stairway of marked steps descending to the river, used to measure the height of the annual flood and predict the harvest (and taxes). Wandering the ruins, you walk through layer upon layer of Egyptian, Nubian, and later history.

History and hospitality.

Elephantine is not just ruins — it is home to charming Nubian villages whose colourful houses and friendly people give the island a warm, living character. Reached by a short ferry or felucca ride from the Aswan corniche, it is a peaceful place to wander, with lovely views of the Nile, the dunes of the west bank, and passing sailboats. It pairs beautifully with a felucca sail and a visit to the Nubian villages.
