The most magical time to sail is sunset. As the felucca drifts among Elephantine Island, Kitchener's Island, and the boulders, the sky turns gold and pink and the desert glows. Many travellers call a sunset felucca ride the highlight of their stay in Aswan.

Felucca rides are easy to arrange along the Aswan corniche; simply agree the price and length of the trip with the captain beforehand. A short sunset sail of an hour or two is the classic choice, but feluccas (and larger sailing boats called dahabiyas) can also be hired for longer journeys, even multi-day trips downriver toward Luxor — a slower, romantic alternative to a cruise ship. However long you sail, it is an unforgettable way to experience the heart of Aswan.
