Along Egypt's Red Sea coast, the wind blows strong and steady — among the best wind resources anywhere on Earth, with average speeds of 8 to 10 metres per second. The Gulf of Suez has become the heart of Egypt's wind-power drive, dotted with world-class wind farms built by international developers such as ACWA Power, the Red Sea Wind consortium, and Infinity's West Bakr project. Together they turn this windy coast into a powerhouse of clean electricity.

This natural advantage has made the area the focus of Egypt's wind-energy push, attracting major international developers and billions in investment to build large onshore wind farms across the desert near the shore.

Several flagship projects cluster here. ACWA Power of Saudi Arabia is building a giant wind farm of around 1.1 GW; the Red Sea Wind Energy consortium (including ENGIE and partners) has brought a large onshore wind farm near Ras Ghareb into operation; and West Bakr Wind, developed by Infinity, has been generating since 2021. Alongside older farms at Zafarana and Gabal El Zeit, they make the Gulf of Suez one of the most important wind-energy zones in Africa and the Middle East.

Together with the great solar parks at Benban and Abydos and the planned 10 GW wind mega-farm, the Gulf of Suez wind farms are central to Egypt's clean-energy transformation.
