With a planned capacity of 10 gigawatts, this would be one of the largest onshore wind farms on Earth — a scale matched by very few projects anywhere. Developed by a consortium of Masdar, Infinity Power, and Hassan Allam Utilities, it has secured access to a vast tract of land of around 3,000 square kilometres in the windy West Sohag region, where development studies and surveys are under way. Its sheer size makes it a landmark of global renewable energy.

The numbers are extraordinary: the farm is projected to generate roughly 47,790 GWh of clean energy a year, displace around 23.8 million tonnes of CO2 annually — close to a tenth of Egypt's total emissions — and save the country an estimated $5 billion in natural-gas costs each year. Few single projects anywhere promise such a large climate and economic impact, underscoring why it is a centrepiece of Egypt's clean-energy vision.

A project of this magnitude takes years to develop, and the wind farm is progressing through its study, survey, and financing stages rather than yet being built. Like all very large energy projects, it faces challenges in securing long-term finance and grid capacity. But as a statement of ambition — and a key part of reaching Egypt's target of 42% renewable electricity by 2030 — it captures the scale of the country's clean-energy aspirations alongside its existing wind farms.
