Among the newest jewels of Egypt's solar push is the Abydos plant at Kom Ombo, near Aswan. Developed by the UAE's AMEA Power, this roughly 500-megawatt solar facility was commissioned recently and, crucially, was paired with Egypt's first utility-scale battery storage system. By storing solar energy for use after dark, Abydos marks an important step beyond simply generating clean power — toward making renewable energy available around the clock.

The Abydos solar plant sits near Kom Ombo in the sun-drenched Aswan region, one of the best places on Earth for solar power. Developed by AMEA Power of the UAE with a capacity of around 500 megawatts, it was commissioned recently and feeds clean electricity into the national grid. Its inauguration added significant new solar capacity at a stroke, reinforcing Upper Egypt's role as the heartland of the country's solar industry alongside nearby Benban.

What makes Abydos especially significant is its battery storage system — billed as Egypt's first utility-scale battery installation. Solar plants only generate during daylight, but Egypt's demand peaks in the evening; the batteries solve this by storing daytime solar energy and releasing it after sunset. This pairing of solar with storage is a milestone for the Egyptian grid, showing how batteries can turn intermittent renewables into reliable, round-the-clock power.

The template ahead.القالب القادم.

Abydos has become a template for Egypt's next wave of renewable projects, with further large solar-plus-storage plants planned at Benban and elsewhere. By proving that solar and batteries can work together at scale, it helps pave the way for renewables to take a much larger share of Egypt's electricity. It stands as one of the flagship achievements of the country's clean-energy programme.
