Benban is enormous. Spread across roughly 37 square kilometres of desert, it brings together dozens of individual solar plants built side by side into a single giant complex with a capability of around 1.5 gigawatts — among the highest of any solar park on Earth. So vast is the array that it is clearly visible from space. Located near Aswan, in one of the sunniest regions on the planet, it is perfectly placed to capture the desert's abundant sunshine.

Benban is the centrepiece of Egypt's push to expand renewable energy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, a key goal of the country's Vision 2030 strategy. Generating clean electricity for the national grid, it helps power homes and industry while cutting carbon emissions. Built largely between 2017 and 2019 with international investment and dozens of developers, it became a landmark example of large-scale solar power in the region — and a model for the further wind and solar projects now rising across Egypt.

Benban is part of a much bigger picture. Blessed with year-round sun and strong desert winds, Egypt aims to draw a large and growing share of its electricity from renewable sources in the years ahead, adding major wind farms along the Red Sea coast and further solar projects to its grid. There is a poetic echo here: the same brilliant sunshine the ancient Egyptians worshipped as the god Ra is now, at places like Benban, being turned into the clean energy of a modern nation.
