جولات القاهرة

Cairo is the one city in Egypt where a guide and a car are worth it almost regardless of budget — not for the commentary alone, but because the traffic will otherwise decide your day for you.

The tours worth takingالجولات التي تستحق

  • Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum — the standard full day. Museum in the morning, plateau in the afternoon, or the reverse in winter.
  • Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur — the Step Pyramid and the Bent and Red Pyramids. Older than Giza, quieter, and the best second day in Cairo.
  • Islamic Cairo on foot — the Citadel, Sultan Hassan, Al-Muizz Street, Khan el-Khalili. Best from mid-afternoon into the evening when the street lights come on.
  • Coptic Cairo — the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue, the Coptic Museum. Compact, usually combined with Islamic Cairo or the old museum.
  • Food tours — koshari, ful, taameya and the downtown street-food circuit, usually in the evening. One of the better-value experiences in the city.
  • Night tours — the Sound and Light show at the Sphinx, or Al-Muizz Street after dark.

Private, group or independentخاص أم جماعي

Private car and guideQuoted per vehicle, so per-person cost drops with group size. Buys you your own start times, which is the whole game in Cairo.
Small groupCheaper, fixed departures, fine for Giza and Saqqara. Start times are usually later than ideal.
IndependentEntirely workable with ride-hailing apps and a guide hired at the site. Cheapest, and costs you time.
Half-day toursRarely good value in Cairo — half the slot disappears into traffic.
Start timeAsk for 7am, not 9am. It is the single biggest difference between two otherwise identical tours.
If an itinerary lists a papyrus institute, perfume palace or carpet school, that's a commission stop. Say in advance you'd rather skip it — a good operator will.

Timing and trafficالتوقيت والزحام

Giza is 18–20 km from downtown and can take 45 minutes or well over two hours depending on when you leave. Friday mornings are the quietest window of the week. Late afternoon into evening is the worst.

Plan one major site per half-day and don't let an operator sell you three. More on the city itself on the things to do page and the Cairo travel guide.

Common questionsأسئلة شائعة

What is the best tour in Cairo?

Giza with the Grand Egyptian Museum for a first visit. For a second day, Saqqara and Dahshur is the stronger tour — older pyramids and a fraction of the crowds.

Are private tours in Cairo worth it?

In Cairo specifically, yes for most people. Private means your own start times, and being at Giza at opening rather than mid-morning changes the day entirely.

How long is a Cairo pyramids tour?

A full day if it includes the Grand Egyptian Museum, or around four hours for the plateau alone. Half-day tours lose too much time to traffic.

Can you do Cairo tours without a guide?

Yes — ride-hailing apps make transport easy and you can hire a licensed guide at the site. You'll spend more time organising and more energy fending off touts.
