- Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum — the standard full day. Museum in the morning, plateau in the afternoon, or the reverse in winter.
- Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur — the Step Pyramid and the Bent and Red Pyramids. Older than Giza, quieter, and the best second day in Cairo.
- Islamic Cairo on foot — the Citadel, Sultan Hassan, Al-Muizz Street, Khan el-Khalili. Best from mid-afternoon into the evening when the street lights come on.
- Coptic Cairo — the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue, the Coptic Museum. Compact, usually combined with Islamic Cairo or the old museum.
- Food tours — koshari, ful, taameya and the downtown street-food circuit, usually in the evening. One of the better-value experiences in the city.

Giza is 18–20 km from downtown and can take 45 minutes or well over two hours depending on when you leave. Friday mornings are the quietest window of the week. Late afternoon into evening is the worst.
