Rising in elegant splendour on the east bank of the Nile, right beside Luxor Temple, the Winter Palace is the grande dame of Luxor's hotels. Opened in 1907 for the European aristocracy who wintered in Egypt, it combines Edwardian grace with lush royal gardens and views over the river to the Theban hills. Steeped in the golden age of Egyptology, it was here, on the hotel's own notice board, that the world first learned of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb.

The Winter Palace opened in 1907, in the heyday of grand Nile tourism, to give wealthy Europeans a luxurious base for the Egyptian winter season. Designed in a refined Edwardian and Victorian style, with sweeping staircases, high ceilings, and famous flowering royal gardens, it sits directly on the Corniche beside the great Luxor Temple. From its terraces, guests look out over the Nile to the west bank — the land of the pharaohs' tombs — making it perfectly placed at the heart of ancient Thebes.

The Winter Palace is forever tied to the most famous moment in Egyptology. During the great age of excavation, archaeologists working in the nearby Valley of the Kings made the hotel their base, and it was here, in 1922, that the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb was first announced on the hotel's notice board. Over the years its guests have included royalty, heads of state, and the writer Agatha Christie, adding to the romance of a hotel that has watched history unfold.

Recently run as the Sofitel Winter Palace, the hotel entered a new chapter in 2026, closing for a complete restoration that will see it reopen as the Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor. The work aims to renew its historic rooms and famous gardens while preserving the character that has made it a legend for over a century. When it reopens, it is set to take its place once again among the great Nile hotels — a living link between the comfort of today and the golden age of Egyptian exploration.
