Offshore & Liveaboardsالرحلات البحرية

The Red Sea's remote offshore reefs — the Brothers, Daedalus, and St John's — reached only by liveaboard, offering world-class walls, sharks, and big-fish diving.

Beyond the reach of day boats, far out in the blue, lie the Red Sea's most legendary dive sites — remote offshore reefs that rise from deep water teeming with sharks, schooling fish, and pristine coral. Reaching them means joining a liveaboard: a dive boat you live on for several days, sailing to sites impossible to visit from shore. For experienced divers, these offshore reefs and the liveaboard journeys that reach them are the ultimate Red Sea adventure.

The Red Sea's offshore reefs sit far from land, surrounded by deep, open water. Because they cannot be reached on a day trip, they remain pristine and exhilarating — sheer walls plunging into the blue, swept by currents that draw in big pelagic life. These are generally advanced sites, suited to experienced divers comfortable with depth, currents, and blue water, and the reward is some of the most thrilling and untouched diving anywhere on Earth.

A handful of offshore reefs are world-famous. The Brothers Islands (El Akhawein) are two tiny rocks with spectacular walls, resident sharks, and two historic wrecks. Daedalus Reef, far out in mid-sea, is renowned for schooling hammerhead sharks and a stunning anemone-covered plateau. In the deep south near the Sudanese border, St John's offers a maze of pristine reefs, caves, and coral pinnacles. Sites like these, along with Marsa Alam's Elphinstone, are the stuff of diving legend.

A liveaboard is a comfortable boat you live on for around a week, sailing between dive sites and offering three or four dives a day, including night dives. It lets divers reach clusters of remote reefs in one trip — popular routes include the northern wrecks and reefs, the famous "BDE" loop (the Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone), and the pristine deep south. Waking up moored over a reef, with nothing but sea in every direction, is a magical experience and the classic way to dive the Red Sea's best.

Liveaboards typically depart from Hurghada, Port Ghalib, or Marsa Alam, with trips running for around a week. Most offshore itineraries require advanced certification and logged experience, as the sites involve currents and depth. Seasons matter, too: autumn is prime time for oceanic whitetip sharks, while hammerhead action peaks in the warmer months. Wherever you sail, responsible, low-impact diving helps keep these remote reefs as wild and pristine as they are today. See also our pages on reef sharks and oceanic sharks.
