A tranquil resort town on Egypt's deep-south Red Sea coast — home to pristine reefs, dolphins, and dugongs, and a haven for divers and nature lovers seeking a quieter shore.

Far to the south of the busier Red Sea resorts lies Marsa Alam, one of Egypt's most tranquil and unspoiled coastal gems. Once a sleepy fishing village, it has blossomed into a relaxed resort town — yet it remains blissfully quiet compared with Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh. With some of the most pristine coral reefs in the Red Sea and an astonishing wealth of marine life, Marsa Alam is a paradise for divers, snorkellers, and anyone who loves unspoiled nature.

Marsa Alam is a legendary name among divers. Because it was developed later than the northern resorts, its reefs are exceptionally healthy and unspoiled. World-famous dive sites lie within reach, including the dramatic Elphinstone Reef, known for its steep walls and sightings of oceanic sharks, and Dolphin House (Samadai Reef), a horseshoe-shaped reef where pods of spinner dolphins gather. The warm, clear water and vibrant coral gardens make both diving and snorkelling here truly world-class.

Few places in Egypt rival Marsa Alam for encounters with rare marine life. The seagrass beds at bays like Abu Dabbab are famous for resident dugongs — the gentle "sea cows" rarely seen elsewhere — as well as large green turtles grazing in the shallows. Add reef sharks, rays, dolphins, and a kaleidoscope of reef fish, and it becomes one of the best stretches of coast in the country for getting close to extraordinary creatures, whether you dive, snorkel, or simply float above the reef.

Marsa Alam is more than reefs. Just south lies the magnificent Wadi El Gemal National Park, a vast protected area where desert mountains, valleys, and mangrove-lined coast shelter gazelles, ibex, and birdlife, alongside ancient ruins and living Bedouin heritage. The town sits close to the Tropic of Cancer, giving it warm weather almost year-round. Between desert safaris, snorkelling trips, and quiet beaches, it offers a relaxed blend of sea and Sahara found nowhere else on the coast.

Marsa Alam's coast is dotted with relaxed all-inclusive resorts and dive-focused eco-lodges, many set on their own quiet bays and house reefs — ideal for a restful, nature-led holiday. The opening of Marsa Alam International Airport made the region far easier to reach, with direct flights from Europe, and it is also about a three-to-four-hour drive south of Hurghada. For warm, clear water and superb diving, the Red Sea here rewards visitors year-round, with spring and autumn especially pleasant.
