The big pelagic sharks of the offshore Red Sea — bold oceanic whitetips and schooling hammerheads, the holy grail for shark divers at sites like Elphinstone and Daedalus.قروش أعالي البحار الكبيرة في عرض البحر الأحمر — القرش المحيطي الجريء وأسماك المطرقة المتجمّعة، حلمُ غوّاصي القروش في مواقع كإلفنستون وديدالوس.

Beyond the reef sharks of the coast lurk the true giants of the Red Sea: the great open-ocean sharks. At remote offshore reefs, divers come face to face with bold oceanic whitetip sharks roaming the blue, and the unforgettable sight of scalloped hammerheads gathering in schools. These are the "big-fish" encounters that draw experienced divers from around the world, and they are among the most thrilling experiences the Red Sea — or any sea — has to offer.

The Oceanic Whitetipالقرش المحيطي

A bold roamer of the blue.جوّابٌ جريء في الزرقة.

The oceanic whitetip shark is a creature of the open sea, rarely seen near the coast. Recognisable by its long, rounded, white-tipped fins, it cruises the deep blue with a slow, confident menace, often trailed by pilot fish. Unlike the wary reef sharks, the oceanic whitetip is famously bold and curious, approaching divers closely in the water column. Encountering one in the open blue, far from any reef, is a heart-pounding highlight of offshore Red Sea diving and a true test of a diver's composure.

Even more spellbinding are the scalloped hammerhead sharks, which gather in schools at certain offshore reefs. To hang in the blue and watch dozens of these strange, beautiful sharks glide past in formation is one of the great spectacles in all of diving. They tend to appear in deeper water, often early in the morning, at famous sites like Daedalus Reef and the Brothers Islands. Sighting a hammerhead school is never guaranteed — which makes it all the more thrilling when it happens.

Offshore reefs, the right season.شعابٌ بعيدة وموسمٌ مناسب.

These pelagic sharks haunt the remote offshore reefs: Marsa Alam's Elphinstone, plus Daedalus and the Brothers, mostly reached by liveaboard. Timing matters: oceanic whitetips are most reliably seen in autumn, while hammerheads favour the warmer months. These are advanced dives in current and blue water, for experienced divers only — but for those ready, they offer encounters that rank among the very best on Earth.

Awe, with care.رهبةٌ مع حذر.

Both oceanic whitetips and hammerheads are magnificent apex predators — and both are globally threatened by overfishing. Encounters should be approached with calm respect: stay composed, keep eye contact with curious oceanic whitetips, never chase or harass, and follow your guide's briefing. Beyond the thrill, these sharks are vital to ocean health, and the Red Sea's reputation for big-shark diving gives the world a powerful reason to keep them swimming.
