A remote desert paradise of turquoise salt lakes, palm groves, and natural springs, home to a unique Amazigh culture all its own. In the Western Desert, near the Libyan border.
Far out in Egypt's Western Desert, close to the Libyan border, lies Siwa — the country's most remote and magical oasis. A green island of date palms and olive groves amid endless sand, it has been isolated for so long that it feels like another world, with its own language, architecture, and way of life. Famed for its dazzling salt lakes, healing springs, and ancient ruins, Siwa offers travellers a rare escape into a calmer, older Egypt.
A World Apart ·
A culture and language unlike anywhere else in Egypt.
Siwa sits in a deep depression below sea level, around 560 km from Cairo — an eight-to-ten-hour journey across the desert. Its roughly thirty thousand inhabitants are mostly Amazigh (Berber) and speak their own language, Siwi, preserving traditions, music, crafts, and dress found nowhere else in Egypt. Many still live among (or recall) homes built of kershef — salt-rich mud brick — and the oasis is celebrated for its dates and olive oil and its silver jewellery and embroidery. The pace is slow, the welcome warm, and the atmosphere refreshingly far from the tourist crowds.
Springs & Salt Lakes ·
Swim, soak, and watch the desert sunset.
Siwa's natural waters are its great delight. Its salt lakes are so intensely saline that you float effortlessly on their brilliant turquoise surface, as in the Dead Sea, and they are prized for their therapeutic qualities. Scattered around the oasis are warm and cool natural springs — the most famous being Cleopatra's Spring, a palm-ringed pool perfect for a soak — while Fatnas Island is the classic spot to watch the sun sink over the palms and water. Together they make Siwa one of the most restorative places in all of Egypt.
Ancient Siwa ·
Where Alexander the Great came to learn his fate.
Siwa's history runs deep. Its Temple of the Oracle of Amun was so renowned across the ancient Mediterranean that Alexander the Great journeyed here in 331 BC to consult it about his destiny — and, by legend, wished to be buried in the oasis. Towering over the old town are the crumbling mud-brick ruins of the Shali Fortress, a 13th-century citadel where Siwans once sheltered, largely dissolved by a rare three-day rainstorm in 1926. Nearby, the Mountain of the Dead is honeycombed with painted rock-cut tombs from the late pharaonic and Greco-Roman ages.
The Great Sand Sea & Visiting ·
Safari adventure and where to stay.
Beyond the greenery lies the Great Sand Sea, a vast ocean of towering dunes ideal for 4x4 desert safaris, sandboarding, and soaks in remote hot springs. Siwa has its own gentle tourism scene, from simple guesthouses to celebrated eco-lodges built in traditional style. The best time to visit is between October and April, when days are mild and nights cool; summers are very hot. Most travellers arrive by long-distance bus or private car from Cairo or the coastal city of Marsa Matruh — a journey that is part of the adventure.
