Africa's largest pharmaceutical producer — near self-sufficient in medicines, a fast-growing export hub, and home to one of the region's biggest healthcare reforms.
Healthcare and pharmaceuticals form one of Egypt's most resilient and fast-growing sectors. With a population of more than 110 million, a rising burden of chronic disease, and a long industrial heritage, Egypt has become the largest pharmaceutical producer in Africa — making the overwhelming majority of its own medicines. Backed by a sweeping universal-health-insurance reform, a drive to localize production, and growing exports across the continent and the Arab world, the sector offers investors a rare mix of scale, stability, and growth.

Egypt's pharmaceutical industry dates back to 1939 and today leads the continent. The country manufactures the great majority of the roughly 17,000 medical products registered for sale, and domestic companies now supply around 93% of local medicine needs — a remarkable level of self-sufficiency. Generic drugs make up the bulk of the market, keeping medicines affordable for a large population with heavy demand for treatments for diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic conditions. Centred on manufacturing hubs in Cairo and Alexandria, the sector kept expanding strongly through 2025, with domestic medicine sales rising sharply.
Localize & Export ·
Climbing the value chain and reaching new markets.
The next frontier is localizing higher-value production and exporting more. Egypt still imports most of its active pharmaceutical ingredients, so the government has launched a dedicated Pharmaceutical Raw Materials City and is pushing into advanced segments such as oncology drugs, biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, and infant formula. Quality has risen to international standards — the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) has earned a respected WHO maturity-level accreditation and enforces good-manufacturing-practice rules — paving the way for exports, which already reach roughly 147 countries and are targeted to grow toward several billion dollars. This builds directly on Egypt's wider manufacturing and import-substitution drive.
Universal Coverage ·
A historic expansion of access to care.
Underpinning demand is one of the largest social reforms in Egypt's modern history: the rollout of a comprehensive Universal Health Insurance system, being phased in governorate by governorate at a cost of many billions of pounds and eventually intended to cover every citizen. Alongside it, the state has built thousands of hospitals and clinics — around 2,000 hospitals and many thousands of primary-care units — and is planning specialized "medical cities" across multiple governorates to bring advanced care closer to people. A parallel digital-health drive, part of Digital Egypt 2030, is computerising medical records and modernising clinics. World-renowned Egyptian medicine — embodied by figures like the heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub — adds further prestige to the sector.
Why It Matters for Investors ·
A defensive sector with structural growth.
Few sectors combine such durable demand with such clear policy support. A large, growing, and ageing population, rising chronic disease, and the spread of health insurance all guarantee long-term demand for medicines and care. The government actively courts investors with tax breaks, subsidies, dedicated industrial zones, and faster regulatory approvals, while Egypt's trade agreements make it a springboard for exporting to Africa and the Middle East. Opportunities span local drug and raw-material manufacturing, biopharma, medical devices, hospitals and clinics, and digital health. Investors typically engage through the Egyptian Drug Authority, the Ministry of Health, and the General Authority for Investment (GAFI).
