The quiet coastal town of El Alamein carries one of the most famous names of the Second World War. It was here, in 1942, that Allied and Axis armies fought a series of decisive battles in the deserts beside the Mediterranean — a turning point that helped decide the fate of North Africa and beyond. Today El Alamein is a place of solemn remembrance, where war cemeteries and a museum honour the tens of thousands of soldiers, from many nations, who fought and fell on these sands.

In 1942, the deserts around El Alamein became the stage for some of the most important fighting of the Second World War. Here the Allied forces, led by British general Montgomery, halted and then decisively defeated the Axis armies under the German general Rommel, the famed "Desert Fox." The Second Battle of El Alamein, late in 1942, is widely seen as a major turning point of the war in North Africa, ending the Axis advance toward Egypt and the Suez Canal and beginning their long retreat.

El Alamein is, above all, a place of memory. The Commonwealth War Cemetery holds the graves of thousands of soldiers from Britain and across its former empire, its rows of headstones stretching toward the sea. Nearby stand the imposing German and Italian memorials and ossuaries, honouring their own war dead. The El Alamein Military Museum tells the story of the desert campaign with weapons, vehicles, uniforms, and maps, helping visitors understand the scale and human cost of the battles fought here.
