The strategic staples at the heart of Egypt's food security — wheat for the nation's bread, plus maize and other grains, the crops the whole country depends on.

If fruits earn Egypt money abroad, grains keep the nation fed at home. Wheat above all sits at the very heart of Egypt's food security — it is the foundation of the country's bread, providing roughly a third of the average Egyptian's daily calories. Together with maize and other grains, these strategic staples are a national priority, and boosting their home production is one of the central goals of Egypt's entire agricultural strategy.

Wheat is the single most important staple in the Egyptian diet, the basis of the bread eaten at virtually every meal — providing roughly a third of the average person's daily calories. Because demand is so vast, Egypt has long been one of the world's largest wheat importers, which makes domestic production a matter of national security. Raising the home harvest is therefore one of the country's highest agricultural priorities.

Beyond wheat, Egypt grows maize (corn) and other grains, used both for food and as essential animal feed for the country's livestock and poultry. Like wheat, much of this grain has traditionally been imported, so expanding domestic output strengthens the whole food chain. These strategic crops are grown across the old Nile lands and increasingly on new reclaimed farmland in projects like the New Delta and Toshka.

Reducing the imports.

Boosting grain production is the cornerstone of Egypt's drive for food security and reduced dependence on volatile world markets. The strategy runs on two tracks: growing more staples like wheat to feed the nation, while earning export income from high-value fruits. Backed by new farmland, modern irrigation, and strategic grain storage, raising the home harvest of wheat and grains is one of the most important missions in Egyptian agriculture.
