Egypt has one of the largest pharmaceutical industries in the region, producing a great share of the medicines its people use. Now the sector is growing fast and moving up the value chain — not only manufacturing finished medicines but increasingly producing the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) behind them. This push toward local production of medicines and their ingredients is central to Egypt's drive for health security and reduced dependence on imports.

Egypt's pharmaceutical industry is among the biggest and oldest in the Middle East and Africa, with a long history of producing medicines for its large population. A mix of Egyptian and multinational companies operate factories across the country, supplying most of the medicines used domestically and exporting to regional markets. This established base gives Egypt real strength and expertise in drug manufacturing.

Historically, even locally made medicines relied on imported active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) — the core chemical compounds that make drugs work. Egypt is now investing in producing these ingredients at home, a more advanced and strategically vital step. Local API production reduces reliance on foreign suppliers, strengthens the whole supply chain, and was shown to be crucial for resilience during recent global disruptions.

Building a fuller domestic pharmaceutical industry — from ingredients to finished medicines — is a matter of national health security.
