Inland from the coast, at the foot of Mount Sinai in South Sinai, stands Saint Catherine's Monastery — built between 548 and 565 AD on the order of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, and still an active Greek Orthodox monastery today. It is widely recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery in the world, and its site is considered sacred across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
The monastery encloses the traditional site of the Burning Bush, and its library holds one of the world's most important collections of early Christian manuscripts and icons, alongside the ancient Well of Moses. In 2002, UNESCO inscribed the monastery and the surrounding Mount Sinai area as a World Heritage Site for both its cultural and natural significance.
