Weightlifting and strength sports have given Egypt some of its proudest Olympic and continental moments. Egyptian lifters are regulars on African and Mediterranean podiums and have broken through at the Olympic level.
In 2016, Sara Ahmed became the first Arab woman to win an Olympic weightlifting medal, taking bronze in Rio — a landmark moment for women's strength sport in the region.
